An anniverasry marked tomorrow

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are all enjoying the week so far.

I thought I would just take a little time to mark an anniversary which happening tomorrow, it is the anniversary of the first recorded prisoner held within the Tower of London.  The honour of that title goes to Ralph de Flambard, the Bishop of Durham, who on 15th August 1100 was imprisoned in the Tower.

A former Constable of the Tower and financial advisor to William II, held on orders from Henry I, charged with extortion after the death of William II. He escaped by rope from the top floor of the White Tower 2nd February 1101 and fled to Normandy.  He was restored to favour in 1106 and died 5th September 1128 and is buried in Durham.

Here's a link to a website with more information on Ralph de Flambard if you would like to do a little research or know a little more.

So not only was he the first recorded prisoner of the Tower but also the first escapee! A double whammy!

Until next time, take care all.

Heather
