7th August 1888 the body of a local prostitute, Martha Turner, was found in George Yard Buildings Whitechapple with 39 wounds which had been inflicted with a dagger or bayonet suggesting a military connection. The Officers and Men of the Garrison within the Tower of London were stood up for an identity parade as another local prostitute, had seen Martha Turner on the night of the 6th August with a soldier on her arm. This prostitute was bought into the Tower to see if she could pick the soldier out. After two hours she could not make a positive identification. Over the next three months further victims were found mutilated, giving the murderer the nick name of 'Jack the Ripper'. It is still uncertain if poor Martha Turner had been one of his first victims.
